Vegan Pregnancy: The First Trimester

Oh the flutter of your heart when you look at that stick and see a little blue cross. It was so faint the first time I had a positive pregnancy test that I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. Was I just imagining it?

I took another test the next day and, there it was-another blue cross. I was definitely not making it up. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I googled “faint positive pregnancy test”, and I saw that it was a pretty common search. Whew. Apparently false positives are very rare so I embraced my life-changing news and began thinking about how I could tell my husband.

The next day I told him that we would go have a picnic at a park we love. (We had gone there plenty of times so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.) I bought some cute booties and wrapped them in a gift bag to surprise the unsuspecting dad-to-be.

Daniel’s work course ended early and we headed out to the park. Of course we forgot the knives and forks for our meal so we could only snack on chips and the guac. I reached in my bag and said, “Oh here they are!” and gave him the present instead. He saw the booties and the note that said, “I think you are going to be a dad this year!” and we both teared up. It was an incredible experience to share together.

Week 1 through 6 were quite normal actually. Lots of yoga. Lots of cooking. Lots of ignorant bliss. I actually thought I was better than the so called “symptoms of pregnancy.” Oh dear was I mistaken. Nausea hit me at 7 or 8 weeks like an unexpected wave that knocked me down and repeatedly bashed me while I was under. Out the window went my salads and favorite meals. Indian curries? Don’t bring them near me. Beans and rice? Not in a million years!

I was cutting out wheat to see if I had an allergy…not a good time to be doing that AT ALL. I struggled to find options that were vegan and gluten-free. We ended up eating out a lot, but the thought of cooking food smells was just way too much for me.

I ended up eating a lot of sushi (avocado rolls and veggie rolls) as well as countless Chipotle burrito bowls. I went through a potato phase for about two weeks, and those I actually made at home. One week I was craving one of my favorite childhood comfort foods, macaroni and cheese – which as you know is neither gluten free nor vegan. I ate some. (I actually ate it three times to be exact.) Did it taste good? Yes! Would I do it now in week 15? No. But at that point I was willing to compromise because the thought of everything else made me so nauseous.

  1. Cravings: Sushi, coffee (I think I’ve had 8 cups in my ENTIRE LIFE), apple juice, potatoes, mac ‘n cheese, kettle-cooked potato chips.

  2. Aversions: Salads, stir-fry, curry, beans, rice. Mostly healthy food (why is that????)

On my 30th birthday (2/22), I was in the middle of week 7 and we went to our first ultrasound. To hear that little heart beating at 142 beats per minute was the reminder I needed that this experience is truly a miracle and made me even more grateful to be carrying a child. We fell so in love with this little baby that was causing all of these crazy changes in my body.

At the end of my first trimester, the waves of nausea were more like ripples and I was getting my energy and appetite back. Flash forward to today, and I’m so amazed at what is happening in my body. I’ve softened as a person (and especially as a vegan) as I have had to be kind to myself and our little one growing inside of me.

How was your first trimester? How did you tell your significant other? We’d love to hear about it.
